Since joining Flix Brewhouse in early spring of 2015, I’ve often thought about how our vision “to be the gold standard entertainment experience in each community we serve” holds true. As time passes, I have learned that being the “gold standard” is not just about serving guests who walk through our doors but also serving our extended communities in times of need.
On Friday August 25th, 2017 Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Corpus Christi, TX as a Category 4 Hurricane, dumping a record-shattering 51+ inches of rain. In the days following, catastrophic flooding devastated vast areas of Houston, the Gulf Coast of Texas, and southwest Louisiana. At least one million people were displaced because of Harvey at least 73 deaths were reported.
Businesses, homes, and schools were destroyed by flooding— leaving the city’s most vulnerable residents with virtually nothing. One school in particular, Harmony Science Academy in Houston serves nearly 500 K-12 students at its Braeswood location. Nearly 75% of these students live below the poverty line. The Harmony Science Academy was inundated, taking on many feet of water and many of its students, families and faculty were in vast need of relief.
On Saturday September 1st, 2017, Flix Brewhouse donated a portion of its ticket sales directly to victims of Hurricane Harvey. Specifically, necessities such as blankets, socks, and underwear were purchased through an Amazon.com Wish List for families of the Harmony Science Academy in Houston. Even today, many weeks later, basic necessities, as well as school supplies are still needed to help Harmony students, families, and faculty recover. As we all know, in the days after Harvey, the United States faced yet another devastating round of catastrophic weather with Hurricanes Irma and Maria severely impacting Florida and especially, Puerto Rico. Flix Brewhouse extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to those affected by what has been a particularly devastating Atlantic hurricane season.
